Roth 2013 - 72.3% (-)
Windows - 9.6% (-)

Sadly, my only progress is on the student loan. Which brings me to my goal for the new year.

My goal is to use what I have. Coincidentally I had recently started doing this so hopefully it will be easy to keep going. There are two main areas with which I'm concerned at the moment, my yarn collection and my food collection. I tend to stockpile when I find either a good deal or a hard to find item. I'm pretty sure my yarn collection could keep me knitting for a year. My food collection is not that big, plus I will need more produce on a regular basis. But I have a nice supply of things like dry beans, rice, nut butters, breakfast bars, that will last me quite awhile. I have also been working on the food in my freezer.

So maybe in the process I will spend less and be able to make progress on my stagnant goals.

In less good news, financially speaking anyway, I signed up for my next class assuming I'd be reimbursed for my previous class and so far it hasn't happened. I did a very poor job of reading the documentation requirements :) and need to wait until my transcript updates before I can get reimbursement. I hope that will be soon because I just paid the latest bill with my credit card so I have about a month to pay for it. If I don't get reimbursed in the next few weeks I will have to rob my savings again. Should be temporary of course but I hate to do it. Plus I should be getting my twice yearly car insurance bill anytime now.

The good news is I have no foster kittens this winter. Good on many levels, even though I miss having the little critters around. First it means hopefully our community is making a dent in the kitty overpopulation issue (I believe we are, in fact). But on another level it means I'm not feeding extra mouths, and even bigger, I'm not heating my house to a higher temperature. One might be surprised how big of an impact that can have. Just due to the especially cold weather alone this winter my heating bill has jumped.Mousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16469970973585427488noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-408683192267473284.post-25372641111215132672014-01-01T04:12:00.002-08:002014-01-01T04:12:46.989-08:00DividendsThat time of year again, I recently received my yearly dividend payout and the last of my quarterlies for 2013. Good growth this year, up 42% over last year.

I did a couple of things in the past two months to impact my financial situation. I bought a new vehicle so I now have a loan on that. It did not make my financial goal list. Obviously I intend to pay it off, but I got a superb rate on a 6 year loan (1.9%) so at this point it is at the bottom of my pile in terms of goals.

I also started my master's degree. I'm taking advantage of my employer's reimbursement but it means I have to raid the money from my savings account, finish out the course, then wait for reimbursement. So my savings will keep taking a temporary hit but I won't be putting that on the list either. Other incidentals like books and such will have to be cash flowed.

Other than that, I am slipping behind on my Roth contributions. I have been rather spendy lately. I'm working on reeling it in. If I haven't gotten where I need to by tax refund time, I'll fill it in that way. But I'm really hoping to use the tax refund for windows since that goal is going nowhere :) I'm also hoping with more of my free time being committed long term, I have less time to be spendy..lol. We'll see how that pans out.

Next up, vacation. The second this year. I enjoy traveling and the opportunity doesn't come up much so I feel compelled to make use of opportunities when they arise. Thankfully this month is a three paycheck month so hopefully I can skim off of that and cover it swiftly.

Oops, skipped a couple of months there. But it makes it look like I made a bunch of progress :)

Financial thoughts are swirling here. I've been eyeballing a different vehicle. I wasn't planning to go there for a couple of more years but I'm getting antsy! Unfortunately that means I haven't put away any cash for such transaction so it would mean a loan. Do I really want another loan? And I think I'd have to spend a bit more than I'd want to, in order to get what I really want. A good compromise might be waiting a few months and stashing cash in the meantime. The hard part is there are not a lot of used vehicles of the sort I want available locally. Seems like you catch them off their 3 year lease or you catch them much further down the line with a pile of miles. But if I wait till after the new year I'll be fighting the people wanting to use their tax refunds.. Plus it'd be nice to have this vehicle in time for winter.

Then there are the windows. I haven't been saving money as I should for those. Toying with getting an estimate so at least I have a solid goal. I'm really aiming for spring and wrapping it up with my tax refund. I'm thinking that's a bad time to ask them to come out though for the same reason it's a bad time to buy a car in spring.

Then there's school. I've been thinking about getting a master's on and off for a long time. Last time I looked into it, I couldn't find an option that suited me in terms of timing, location, course work, etc. But I think I've found my match this time. Getting my stuff together now and we'll see how that pans out.Mousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16469970973585427488noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-408683192267473284.post-66790769007264921602013-05-31T14:46:00.001-07:002013-05-31T14:46:07.435-07:00Monthly UpdatePay off student loan - 27.6% (Down .2%)

So my mortgage escrow refund came and I replenished my savings. It's a good feeling. Skipped this month's student loan payment 'cause I can. :) I'm waiting on a different check this month. I cashed in some stock that spun off a stock I've owned forever. I hate managing individual stocks so I dumped it, even though it was kicking butt. But now I can dump that in my roth when it comes. Not much else happening, which is good in my book. Happy summer! Do you ever get that spiraling or downhill feeling? Starting to feel that. This blog is a great check in for me.

So this month I refinanced the house. I had been thinking about it but didn't want to go back into a 30 year loan and the rates had just start going up about when I decided I could probably squeeze into a 20 year. Then my broker hit me up with an offer on a 30 year loan and I figured I may as well since rates were still not much better on 20 year loans.. So I did, and it unfolded while I was on vacation. The appraisal allowed for the costs to be rolled in. I don't think I should have done but then I didn't really ask for it to be handled differently so .. feel like I totally slid backward there. The plan for now is to keep making my old payment so I can regain ground sooner rather than later.

And now my escrow refund is due back anytime. I should probably pump that into the mortgage but right now I'm very tempted to finish paying back my savings from last year's plumbing incident. How overdue is that? lol

My Roth was back on target at the beginning of the month but progress is slip sliding also. I think I'm ahead on my student loan so I might just skip a month and redirect that to the Roth.

Windows are going nowhere and won't this month. Kitty needs a dental cleaning one of these months.. Still need to sit down and consider where my money's going. Not ready to go into full blown budget analysis but I do need to see what's up and if there are holes that can be plugged.Mousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16469970973585427488noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-408683192267473284.post-80077979689078978872013-03-30T08:28:00.001-07:002013-03-30T11:27:10.223-07:00Monthly UpdatePay off student loan - 27.4% (Up .6%)
On the surface it looks like I'm humming along sort of as planned. In reality, my tax refund didn't go at all as planned...lol. By the the time I covered the electrician, the chest freezer, the boarding bill that will be coming for vacation, and an unexpected vet bill, there's really not much left for windows. I also rounded out my Roth for 2012. But that's okay. No regrets. For the record, chocolate poisoning for a small dog can run in the neighborhood of $1000 so put your chocolate far out of reach :) If you're anything like me, you know your dog's abilities but occasionally you get a little um, complacent.

I need to sit down and consider my spending. In the past I've been able to rather easily manage to put $350+ into my Roth each month. I haven't been able to do that since December. I know I covered some big bills but they were expected and I should have been able to plan for those. And that was in January or something. So I probably have a money leak I'm ignoring.. Plus I have another big once-a-year bill coming in May that I should be planning for and I'm not.

Happy Easter, happy spring!Mousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16469970973585427488noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-408683192267473284.post-8122752816332335792013-03-02T15:56:00.001-08:002013-03-02T15:56:22.590-08:00Monthly UpdatePay off student loan - 26.8% (Up .3%)
Woohoo! Finally a little bit of progress on my savings and the windows. Little bit on the Roth too. My state tax refund came in handy for starting the windows fund. My federal refund is due in this week. I was hoping to put all of that toward windows too but I think I'll take some to do a little electrical work and then a little more to get a chest freezer for the basement. Also vacation plans are shaping up and to be honest I'm a little afraid to see the boarding bill for 3 furballs. Last time I went on vacation there were only two, one of which stayed with relatives. So in summary, ta ta for now, windows..lol. Oh well, sooner or later.

But really, I was looking at the big picture this morning and I'm happy overall with where I'm at. So if the windows take longer than I wanted them to, not a big deal. Life's good.Mousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16469970973585427488noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-408683192267473284.post-78158636672707083752013-02-02T07:39:00.000-08:002013-02-02T07:44:07.240-08:00Monthly UpdatePay off student loan - 26.5% (Up .9%)
So I skipped a month when I did my yearly look back.. this constitutes 2 months. Thus far things are not going well in that area. I took from my monthly cash flow to cover 6 months of car insurance and my summer share of a CSA. It didn't really hit me until now that that's where my money went this month :) I guess that is good news - it means I didn't fart away several hundred on small meaningless things..lol. There's also that smaller impact of higher taxes this year. So hopefully next month is better.

I also received a bonus this month that is not reflected in any of those goals. I squirreled it away for a goal not posted here.. something fun if not realistic, so it is back-burnered until I pay back my savings and put windows in. Yet I wanted to save my bonus that way because I feel bonuses should be enjoyed.

Another high note, my taxes are mostly done and looking promising. I should have a nice chunk of change to do with as I please. I was intending to start saving for windows with that, but I may just wipe out that savings goal first. Too old for that stuff :)

2012 goal: Put $4000 into my Roth. Done! Woohoo!

2013 goal: Put $4500 into my Roth.

I was hoping to aim higher in 2013 but I would also like to put the windows in this year, and who knows what will happen with the whole cliff situation. Best wishes to all!Mousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16469970973585427488noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-408683192267473284.post-33980430893499103912012-12-25T18:36:00.000-08:002012-12-25T18:36:03.401-08:00DividendsI love this time of year. Aside from all of the Christmas cheer and feasting, there are dividends! For me anyway :) My yearly (and quarterly) dividends come.. almost like a Christmas present to myself. Growing slowly but surely each year..
Tires goal is gone, one way or another :) I actually didn't need tires just yet, probably not for another year. Someone made a big goof. At least, I hope that's what it was, an outright lie would just make me angry.

The student loan is slipping backwards because of the gap between payments.. I must have paid early a couple of times and now I'm backing off for a bit.

Finally a bit of progress on paying back savings and some decent progress on my Roth, I'm gonna get there yet this year. It is a good spot to be in. And in another month I'll have to make a concerted effort to decide on new goals for next year. How time flies!Mousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16469970973585427488noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-408683192267473284.post-52127322473664133872012-11-01T05:26:00.000-07:002012-11-01T05:26:03.081-07:00Monthly UpdatePay off student loan - 25.8% (Up 1.1%)
I was hoping for better this month. Oh well. I'm planning on putting the tires on this month so I should be knocking that goal out one way or the other, ha :) That third pay check should come in handy for that. There is also a wedding this month that could get costly but so far I'm planning on skipping the hotel/dog boarding experience so that will make it easier in the finances department.

I did treat myself to a toy. The Nexus 7 just price dropped when they rolled out some new models so I picked up one of those. I haven't played too much but so far I'm loving it. Somewhere between an iPad and a Kindle. So far I'm just playing games but I will be exploring the eReading side also. It's been a pretty good month. I'm just a hair behind on Roth contributions for 2012. I was hoping to put more into savings but it didn't happen. I had as much of a vacation as I will have this year, this month. It was great but it did eat into the money I would have sent to savings :) Next month looks to be a 3 pay check month so I'm hoping to get further. I slacked off on the Roth contributions and skipped a payment on the student loan (I was ahead a month or two) so that I could concentrate for a moment on my savings. I don't think I'll continue that trend. I'm thinking back to normal Roth contributions and whatever's left can go to savings. I do have some purchases to make in September, a chair for the living room and an opportunity came up to have help refinishing my hardwood in the office. It looks like I can get most of that out of my monthly cash flow so hopefully no impact on funding the Roth. While I hate to spend the cash right now, I'm super exciting because these items have been on the list for a few years and it will be nice to have them taken care of.
Ouch, it was a painful month. Started with a call to the garage door man to fix my ailing garage door.. followed by a call to the plumber to replace a 35 year old water heater (heh) and a leaky faucet that may have been even older. That resulted in a call to the city who brought out their ditch witch. And ended with a call to someone to patch the hole left by the plumber. At least I think that's the end. The bills are just starting to trickle in and I'm sort of in the dark as to if there will be a present from the city. So I raided my house savings account and may have to snitch some more.

The troubling spot for me is always whether to pause my Roth funding to replace the $$ I used because I have this limited window to make 2012 contributions. On the other hand I don't want to get in the habit of take-take-take from savings and never stopping to put it back. I think I must push pause on the Roth at least for a bit and go back to cash savings.

So that's where I'm at. I was literally just thinking of a do-it-yourself refinishing the hardwoods in the office but that's another couple of hundred I don't need to spend right now.Mousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16469970973585427488noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-408683192267473284.post-6980082030863825052012-07-01T03:44:00.000-07:002012-07-01T03:44:54.225-07:00BeansIn my quest to cook more and eat less highly processed food, beans have become a new favorite. Not only are they nutritious but pretty inexpensive. But if you buy them in a can you'll have some "bonus" items thrown in - salt, sugar, etc. Those are the last things I need :) But cooking dry beans on the stove was not appealing. Then I found my answer - beans in a crock pot.

Fix it and forget it. Before you go to bed, rinse the dry beans well and put them in the crock pot, but don't turn the crock pot on. When you wake up in the morning, rinse the beans again. Turn the crock pot on - low takes around 8 hours and high takes around 4 hours. Come back to beans that are ready for your favorite recipe! I like to prepare extra beans and put a can's worth - cup and a half - into the freezer. This means I usually have my favorites on hand ready to go.. garbanzo, pinto, black, lima. Yum.

Back to the inexpensive part. A pound of dry beans is around $1.00 to $1.50 depending on type. A bag is equal to about 4 cans worth of beans. Crock pots are one of the most efficient items in the home so you're using next to no electricity to cook them.
If you have a pressure cooker you can also prepare them that way. Beans can be cooked without soaking in as little as 20-40 minutes. Cat's teeth needs have been covered by some of the third paycheck this month (yay!) but the goal has been replaced by a need for tires by winter. I'm happy to note that I'm just a hair ahead of goal for Roth 2012. Making slow and steady progress on the first very short term goal, which is good, because I'm enjoying my second "delivery" from the CSA. I'm happy to report that it is working as I intended - veggies I would never willingly buy are being forced upon me. Some things I would never buy that I've found a use for - spinach, radishes, beets. Then there are some of my favorites like leaf lettuce, eggs, peas, strawberries. Unfortunately I haven't yet found a use for green onions. Maybe on the salad? Hm. It is a surprise every week so that is fun. This relates back to the book, The Millionaire Next Door. I enjoyed it, check it out if you haven't. Last I checked you could get a copy dirt cheap on half.com (75 cents plus a few dollars for shipping).

So last time I checked in May 2010, I was at 27%. Today I'm at 38.9%. I'm making up ground :)
Oh, and the calculator if you would like to check your stats:
Looks like the progress is holding steady. I think last month I mentioned a new furry animal in my home. She was since found to have an oral health issue. The "good" news? This kitty is taking her sweet time settling in so I have more time to scrounge up money for her. The bad news is that it is likely very painful for her so the sooner it happens, the sooner her mouth feels better. The vet asked us to wait a few weeks, possibly up to a few months, to let her settle in. Even so with the other goals I might not get around to saving so I'll probably come up with it on the fly..lol. At least it's a three pay check month in June :)

I've been a little spendy lately. June won't be much better with a couple of gift occasions in there. But I figure at least my Roth is being filled for the year. As long as I don't keep robbing my savings I'll be good.Mousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16469970973585427488noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-408683192267473284.post-12949381443077890422012-04-30T04:49:00.000-07:002012-04-30T04:49:59.514-07:00Monthly UpdatePay off student loan - 22.4% (Up .5%)
Pay back savings - disability insurance - 0%

Roth is going well, pretty much right on target. I added two new goals because I yanked from savings twice in the past couple of weeks. The first was to buy a share from a CSA - community supported agriculture project. If you are not familiar with these, check them out. Basically I pay a fee to a local farmer before the season starts, then I get a share of whatever is produced from the farm. In this case, a good variety of veggies, some cage free eggs, and occasional "surprises" from other local vendors. The benefits are wonderful. The farmer I chose uses organic methods. Plus with a CSA you're generally getting the produce at the peak of freshness. And there's no energy wasted trucking veggies from Mexico or even across the country. What I'm hoping it will do for me is force me to eat a bigger quantity and variety of veggies, since my diet is a little lackluster in that department. That's the running joke in my family.. I'm the vegetarian that doesn't eat veggies.

The second is more straightforward. My once a year bill for disability insurance arrived. I'm not sure why it's always a surprise to me. It comes at the same time each year and I should be saving for it ahead but I never think of it.

I brought home a new cat this month - aka money sink hole..haha. At least they're budget friendly in the beginning. If you're ever in the market for a cat, check out your local humane society. For a slim $30, I have a spayed, vaccinated, microchipped cat that comes with a free exam at the area vet of my choosing (sort of, there's a big list to choose from but both vet clinics I use are on it :) ). That exam is $40-45 alone, and a microchip would be in the neighborhood of $25 even from a low cost event. And spaying? Pfft. Even a low cost clinic would charge $40-60. And 3 days after that my lovely dog started limping. I'm giving her a couple of days to get over it, in case it's a sprain, and then I'll check in with the vet. Hopefully there are no new goals in regards to fixing the dog. At this point I'd honestly not be surprised if it's Lymes. We'll see.Mousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16469970973585427488noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-408683192267473284.post-21080298863245484332012-03-31T16:08:00.002-07:002012-03-31T16:14:44.939-07:00Monthly UpdatePay off student loan - 21.9% (Up .5%)
Roth 2012 - 21.9% (Up 5.8%)

I should have a little more to put in my Roth from this month's paychecks but I'll see how the groceries come out tomorrow. The fence is done and paid for, woohoo!! The tax refunds covered it with just a bit to spare. I was hoping to use the leftovers to buy a new chair but instead, I just got a bill for my mortgage's escrow account which will apparently experience a shortage. Last year I got a check for three times the amount they are asking for now, since it was so well stocked. I'm baffled as to why they didn't keep some of that as padding. It's not even like my property taxes or insurance went up, so I'm not sure how they miscalculated so badly. Apart from the escrow miscalculations, I've had nothing but good experience with them (US Bank). So anyway, business as usual. No more house projects for now. About this time next year I think I'll start saving for windows..lol.Mousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16469970973585427488noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-408683192267473284.post-55109191943967125682012-03-01T17:08:00.003-08:002012-03-04T07:26:42.908-08:00Monthly UpdatePay off student loan - 21.4% (Up .6%)
Roth 2012 - 16.1%

Since I skipped last month, that's actually two months worth of updates. Slow going huh? I'm plodding along. My tax refunds came in pretty well this year - $3300-ish between state and federal. I hope that covers the fence, because at this rate I won't have much cushion leftover if I want to hit my Roth goal this year. Fence estimate is coming next week so I'm crossing my fingers.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); line-height: 20px; font-size:13px;" The fence fund as I believe I mentioned last month was wiped out for the cat. I haven't yet started rebuilding that one so I dropped it off. I don't think I'll put it back up. I'm hoping for a tax refund that covers it in one swoop. That leaves the list pretty paltry, especially since I'm making almost-minimum payments on the student loan. I'll throw my 2012 goal up next time for good measure. I spend all of my "fat" this month between the aforementioned cat and also I got a good deal on a tv so I used the paycheck leftovers for that. I'm ready to dig in for the new year! I've been pretty spendy lately..
Mousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16469970973585427488noreply@blogger.com1
